Empowering Porn

I keep running into articles about how porn demeans women because it treats them as objects. There’s a big argument on both sides of that, and maybe, I’ll discuss that in more detail in a later chat. For now, I’ll summarize and say that while some porn does not, most porn does focus on using women for sexual pleasure (which she supposedly likes without any foreplay or focus on her pleasure, blah, blah, blah). And, yeah, that’s probably not helpful for teaching men to treat women as equals. In bed or out of it.

So what do we do? A lot of people say we should ban porn. Stop making it. Get it off the web. Well, as an ideal situation, sure, but not only is that really impractical and hard to do, it’s also not really fair as long as women can still have woman porn – AKA romance novels (which, by the way can be just as chauvinistic, depending on the author). And that’s not gonna happen either.

The way I see it, the biggest problem isn’t that porn exists or even that some porn objectifies women. It’s the fact that most of it does. Hearing one or two people state an opinion is not as powerful or influential as hearing a whole crowd say it. Or having almost everyone you meet say it. When most of porn is telling guys that it’s ok to treat women as objects, it’s harder to think differently than when only some porn does that.

The solution is not to ban porn but to take it over (yes, I’m serious). If women flood the porn channels with fantasies that treat women like equals, then guys will at least see a different opinion. Maybe it wouldn’t take off right away, but some guys would have to be into it. You’d think the fact that women made it would be a turn-on, right? And if you can make it popular, then the voice of the majority will be about equal pleasure not objectification.

Think of it as a marketing campaign. If you can’t beat them, sell them a better option.
